Description: Galatea is a work of interactive fiction, in which the player can interact with a model world by issuing commands in natural language. This particular piece offers the player a conversation with its central character, a conversation with many moods, paths, and possible conclusions.

Technical requirements: Current Web browser with Java enabled.

Start/Restart instructions:
Load URL in Browser to begin. Wait until the applet has fully loaded -- this may take a few moments. Once it is properly loaded, however, you can begin the piece again as many times as you like by typing RESTART.

Then click in the black window, and you will be able to type commands. The most important commands are:

  • LOOK -- get a description of your whole environment
  • EXAMINE <thing> -- get a description of some specific item
  • SMELL, TOUCH, TASTE, LISTEN -- similarly as appropriate
  • ASK ABOUT <any topic of conversation> -- ask Galatea about something specific (can be abbreviated as "A TOPIC")
  • TELL ABOUT <any topic> -- volunteer something (can be abbreviated as just "T TOPIC"
  • THINK ABOUT <any topic> -- review what you know
  • RECAP -- list topics that you have already covered
  •
